What does it mean to live in a “walkable community” ?

A walkable community is one where it is easy and safe to walk to goods, services, and community amenities, such as public parks.

Our city proudly boasts a 100% walkability rate and is also nationally recognized as #4 in the Top 10 Walkable Cities with Affordable Homes in the US by www.realtor.com.

This is a result of the hard work of our Public Works Engineering team, Public Works Crews, and City Contractors for their consideration of ADA compliancy and intentional urban designs, and that of our residents that contribute to the cleanliness and safety of our community. The City of Berwyn Active Transportation Plan includes public  improvements to the infrastructure, recommendations to City policies and program recommendations regarding enforcement and education. The plan is used as a guide when planning transportation improvements and ensuring that all modes of transportation are addressed.

What are the goals of the School Travel Plan Maps ?

School Travel Plan Maps make it safe, convenient, and fun for children to walk and bicycle to and from schools in our community, and develop a safe travel route with parents and caregivers. 

Our goal is to get more children walking and bicycling to school, improve kids' safety, and increase health and physical activity.

Please review the maps and travel the routes with your child, answering any questions and noting walkways, traffic controls, crossing guards before your child begins walking to school. 

For questions regarding the school pedestrian walk route or right-of-way controls, please contact the Public Works Engineering Division during normal work hours.
