Extreme rain events are increasing in duration, intensity, and frequency, which causes more urban and flash floods, more flooding from overflowing rivers, and water management systems reach full capacity.

Severe Weather Preparedness:

Severe weather can happen at any time of the year. Preparing for floods, tornadoes and severe thunderstorms before they strike will help you stay safe throughout the year. To help people better prepare for weather emergencies, the Illinois Emergency Management Agency and the National Weather Service developed a Severe Weather Preparedness Guide to help educate and better prepare Illinois residents for all hazards.

The City of Berwyn will continue to face flooding and water pollution challenges in the future as a result of climate change. To help Berwyn homeowners, we have developed several programs to help with Flood Mitigation:

Residential Flood Mitigation Shared Cost Program (Sewer Backup Prevention)

The City Council passed a resolution adopting a Residential Flood Mitigation Shared Cost Program on November 12, 2014. The goal of this program is to provide financial assistance to homeowners who install systems to protect their homes from sewer backup during a heavy rain event.

Residential Downspout Disconnection Assistance Program

The City Council passed a resolution adopting a Residential Downspout Disconnection Assistance Program on April 14, 2015. This program will provide homeowners with financial assistance in the disconnection of their downspouts from their sewer.
